Unite The Clans
I’m going to do some commenting on some excerpts from James Madison in “The Federalist Papers” so we can point out some of the reasoning behind our Battle Cry. “Liberty is to faction what air is to fire” … What is a faction? “By faction I understand a number of citizens… who are united… by some common impulse of passion… adverse to the rights of other citizens….”
Instead of faction, we could say special interest groups. Factions, like special interest groups, have been known to cause mischief. BUT this is no reason to get rid of them. Top down management style companies have always tried to eliminate these groups. But this is not the wisest option. In Madison’s words, “…it could not be a less folly to abolish liberty… because it nourishes faction than it would be to wish the annihilation of air… because it imparts to fire its destructive agency.”
So, trying to eliminate special interest groups is unwise because they are fed by liberty, and the whole idea is to re-establish our liberties, not get rid of them.
It’s also impractical because, “As long as the reason of man continues fallible, and he is at liberty to exercise it, different opinions will be formed.” James Madison
We have an imperfect ability to reason, we have different abilities and faculties, and the irony of it all is that “The protection of these faculties is the first object of government.” Madison
So, not only are factions/special interest groups not to be eliminated, they are to be protected, just as our liberties are to be protected… but these groups are the cause of all these divisions going on in our country… right?
So what’s the answer?… Click Here
Our answer is to put aside our differences and focus on what we have in common. We are uniting the clans.
What did our founding fathers determine were the points to which we could all come together on? I’ll cover that next.
